Short Description:
Pierce County is looking for a dedicated Planning & Public Works Deputy Director who has:
*Deep knowledge of public works programs, including county road and levee systems, sewer systems, airports, ferries, solid waste operations, and surface water management to reduce flooding and protect water quality.
*Skilled in operational leadership with a strong understanding of field work, team development, change management, equity and inclusion, and the pace and demands of service delivery.
*Proven experience in managing infrastructure assets and ensuring contract compliance, while building strong partnerships with contractors, agencies, elected officials, and community stakeholders.
*Committed to supporting Planning and Public Works teams by ensuring they have the resources, coordination, and information necessary to successfully deliver critical infrastructure and community development projects across Pierce County.

Planning & Public Works Highlights:
Mission and Vision: Planning & Public Works delivers customer-focused services and maintains vital infrastructure to enhance livability in Pierce County. The department envisions a county prepared for growth, with reliable infrastructure supporting safe, sustainable, and vibrant communities.
Comprehensive Support: Managing nearly one-third of the County’s budget, PPW oversees transportation systems, utilities, environmental programs, and county planning—providing the foundation for a thriving Pierce County.
Programs and Services:
Infrastructure: Roads, bridges, ferries, airports, and flood protection.
Community Development: Building and land use permits, land use approvals, and long-range planning.
Utilities & Environment: Sewer systems, surface water management, sustainability initiatives, and solid waste management.
Minimum Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree in engineering, planning, public administration, business, or closely related field.
Ten (10) years of progressively responsible experience in environmental resource management, transportation, maintenance and operations, utilities management, or related field which clearly demonstrates the ability to perform the functions of the position.
Five (5) years of responsible supervisory experience managing a department, division, or large cross-functional team.
Additional education or experience which clearly indicates the ability to perform the essential functions of the position may substitute equally on a year for year basis for the recruiting requirements.
A valid Washington State driver’s license or the ability to otherwise meet the travel requirements of the position is required.
Preferred Qualifications:
Graduate degree in related field.
Licensed as a Professional Engineer (PE) in the State of Washington or the ability to obtain the registration within six (6) months of employment.
Salary and Benefits Information: $158,257.22 to $213,640.91
